as Marine Heritage Advisor.

Simon, who has extensive field experience, holds a PhD in Maritime Archaeology from the University of Bristol. In April 2003 he directed the White House Bay Wreck (1783) survey and excavation in St Kitts, which is believed to be a 1740’s English Troopship sunk in 1782. In 2005 he directed The Button Wreck (1740’s) survey in the Florida Keys where they uncovered a possible English Frigate on top of the reefs. In 2006-9 he directed the important survey and research work in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic on: The Tile Wreck (1720’s), Faience Wreck (1760), Le Casimir (1829), Le Dragon (1783).

Dr. Spooner's doctorial thesis was entitled “Maritime Taphonomy – A study of historic shipwreck formation process on the north coast of the Dominican Republic from 1563 to 1829”. He holds a BSc and is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, as well as joining The Institute of Field Archaeologists. Dr. Spooner is a member of the Nautical Archaeological Society.

SCUBA IN THE PARK

Help save the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston

The lease is due to expire November 2007 and the Federal government (Public Works) has designated the leased land surplus and needs (according to the Feds) to be sold or leased at market value.  So where would the museum get such funding for market value cost of leasing a marine heritage facility on the shore of Lake Ontario?  Where would they be forced to move to (including the ship)?

The City of Kingston is trying to negotiate with the Feds.  Admittedly they (the City and the Museum) have had a good deal for since 1977 of a $1.00 per year lease.  A deal like this obviously is not likely to continue, however, it is vitally important that we give them our support.  A reasonable deal needs to be struck ASAP.  The consequences are too grave to imagine.  Loss of the archive, loss of the exhibits, loss of the Bed and Breakfast in a marine heritage ship building yard.  The setting and the museum were meant for each other and they should continue to coexist.    more info

Knapp's Roller Boat being inspected in 1906
Property City of Toronto Archives

Don't let Toronto's City Hall destroy our heritage again. This spring Toronto allowed a developer to turn Queen's Wharf into furniture. Now City Hall has passed a by-law amendment that will allow development of the rest of Toronto's waterfront, threatening other significant archaeological sites, including the infamous Knapp's Roller Boat buried near the foot of Sherbourne Street.

We accept the need for development, but we believe that part of every city’s pride is in the celebration of its past. Please take a moment to read about Preserving Archaeological Sites of Toronto.  Help preserve Toronto's past. Join me in signing the petition from the PAST Coalition.
