Save Ontario Shipwrecks recognizes contributions to Marine Heritage Preservation.  Peter Engelbert, Marine Archaeologist for Ontario, was presented with an Honorary Lifetime Membership to Save Ontario Shipwrecks on March 25, 2002.  The presentation was made at the SOS Ottawa meeting by Bob Ligthart, Eastern Region Director & Membership Chairman and Brian Prince, Board Member-at-Large on behalf of the entire SOS Board and all of the members.

Peter started doing land archaeology from 1971 to 1982.  He received his SCUBA certification in 1973 and in 1980 he started doing underwater work with volunteers.  The Ministry's Marine Heritage Conservation Program started in 1983.  Peter has done field work on both the east and west coasts of Canada as well as in Bermuda and the northern USA.  Peter is well known for leading NAS I and NAS II courses across Canada.  He has been instrumental in educating divers about the importance of preserving our Marine Heritage through awareness and promoting an understanding and appreciation of this fragile resource.  Peter has given countless hours to teaching marine archaeology and preservation efforts.  It is through this presentation that Save Ontario Shipwrecks acknowledges Peter's commitment to this work.
