The ships of Toronto

Wrecks

There are currently four known shipwrecks in the Toronto area.

Alexandria, Julia B. Merrill, Lyman E. Davis, and the Sligo.

SOS members have submitted an application to perform a survey of the Alexandria. Work on documenting the wreck will begin in 2003.

Wrecked

There are numerous shipwreck reports in this area also.

Where are they now ?

Any information to the where-abouts of these wrecks would be appreciated.

Sailing vessel types and construction

Was that a schooner or a barque ??

Where exactly is that "keelson" ?

You will better appreciate those wrecks when you know all about them.

Diving around Toronto

Toronto has never been pictured as a diver's destination. Mainly due to the fact that there are not as many wrecks to dive on compared to Kingston or Tobermory (just to name a couple). Therefore dive charters are difficult to found here.

This aspect of the diving industry in Toronto is vacant, yet there are numerous retail dive shops and diver training centres in Toronto. This leads us to believe that there are people in Toronto who want to scuba dive, but have no way of doing it here in Toronto as easily as Kingston or Tobermory.

Would this change if Toronto had 6 wrecks to dive on ?; or even one big wreck (like a naval vessel) ?

Through the processes of marine archaeology, the information available concerning the location, types, details, images, and history will become available to the general diving community. This process will inevitably promote the diving industry to expand in the Toronto area.

The new buoys will increase the presence of our current wreck sites.
