Searching |
SOS Toronto is always interested in new historical sites to investigate. Projects towards the surveying of our known wrecks are still in progress. Volunteers may be required. The search continues ... see our Mystery Wrecks page. Any information towards the discovery and preservation of Toronto shipwrecks is appreciated. Please forward information via our online form. Currently the archaeological license for the Alexandria is in the works. |

other Projects |
SOS Hamilton and SOS Toronto have teamed together to work on the discovery
and survey of the wrecks off of Hamilton Harbour. Jim Friend (President of
SOS Hamilton) has submitted a license to conduct a survey on the newly
discovered wreck on behalf of SOS Hamilton and SOS Toronto. Currently there is one wreck, a side-wheel steamer, that has been located and partially surveyed (part of our last NAS 1 course dives). Further detailed surveys will be conducted on the wreck, including video records and possibly a mosaic created (such like the mosaic created by Serena Oyama for Kim Monk's Sligo project). Other wreck sites have also been located, or at least part of wrecks. One of them appears on dry land. It has been reburied in sand to protect the ship until further archaeological analysis can be performed. Two other wrecks are known to be located within the same area, and ongoing efforts are in place to locate and survey them by SOS Hamilton. The Hamilton Conservation Authority is currently involved with SOS Hamilton/Toronto to preserve these new heritage sites, so plenty of future work will be available. |

Baby Jane |
This past June SOS President and Chairman of the Board Jim Hopkins
traveled to Kingston, Jamaica at the invitation of UNESCO to present the
SOS video, "What's Going to Happen to Baby Jane." This twenty-two minute video details the effects of careless diving on fragile, historical underwater resources and offers advice on the advantages of low impact diving. In an effort to "get the word out" about low-impact diving, SOS, through its province-wide chapters is distributing the video to dive shop instructors to be shown as a part of their courses. Our chapter members are targeting a dozen dive shops in the GTA for distribution of the video. Any other dive shops or diving organizations interested in seeing the video should contact us via email: SOS or through our comment form.. |

Buoys |
SOS was successful in obtaining funding form the Ontario Trillium
Foundation towards the purchase and installation of 50 mooring buoys.
The project covers all SOS chapters and also will be extended to other organizations interested in promoting marine heritage and preservation. A list of shipwreck sites chosen will be submitted by March 2003 and the final report submitted by Jan 2004. SOS Toronto has already coordinated bouys on the Sligo and the Alexandra. |
